'Trying' Season 4's Trailer Brings the Family Problems into a New Era

Ted Lasso may have been the British-based series that put Apple TV+ on the map, but Trying, which debuted weeks before the sports juggernaut in May 2020 and spent years being overlooked despite being the more dependably well-done series, will have the last laugh. The family dramedy about a couple who are struggling to conceive may not sound like the stuff of laugh-out-loud comedy, but British comedy knows how to make the most hard and painful parts of life funny, even when they hurt. Moreover, British comedies, understand that sometimes all it takes to be a show with a happy ending is for it not to be a tragedy, as Trying has managed to do every single season, especially with Season 3 when the central couple, Nikki and John, wound up unexpectedly adopting a pair of foster kids they never imagined they'd want.

Trying's almost-perfect happy ending (well, perfect for their family anyway) that closed out Season 3 had viewers wonder where the show could go from there when Apple TV+ promised that Season 4 was greenlit within hours of the finale streaming. It turns out the answer is "To the future!" The series will say goodbye to the younger actors who played adopted kids Princess and Tyler in Season 3 and drive full speed ahead into the second decade of their lives, hitting the middle and high school years full force, with all the teenage hormones and social pecking order issues that are inherent within. 

But if Nikki and John thought that the teenage years were going to be tough because their kids were teenagers, they have another twist to deal with. Now that their kids are becoming fully fleshed-out humans, they also want to know about the families that gave them up. Check out the trailer.

Here’s the Season 4 synopsis:

In the exciting fourth season, we fast-forwarded six years, discovering that Nikki and Jason are experienced adopters, having built a lovely little nuclear family enriched by an extraordinary support network. However, as their teenage daughter, Princess, starts to yearn for a connection with her birth mother, Nikki and Jason find themselves confronted with the ultimate test of their parenting skills.

Trying stars Esther Smith as Nikki and Rafe Spall as Josh, along with Oliver Chris (King Charles III) as Freddy, Sian Brooke (Blue Lights), Darren Boyd (The Outlaws), and Robyn Cara (The Rising). Scarlett Rayner takes over the role of Princess from Season 3’s Eden Togwell, and Cooper Turner the role of Tyler from Mickey McAnulty. 

Andy Wolton created, wrote, and executive produced the Series, with Jim O’Hanlon serving as director and executive producer and Josh Cole also serving as executive producer. The trailer features the new single from London-based pop star BEKA, “Forever.” BEKA is featured in Season 4’s soundtrack, with original songs set to debut in each episode. She follows Maisie Peters and Bear’s Den, who wrote and performed the soundtracks for Seasons 2 and 3, respectively.

Trying Season 4 arrives on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 22, 2024, and will stream new episodes weekly every Friday through the beginning of July.
